What To Stream on Netflix This Christmas

A Very Murray Christmas is Bill Murray’s Netflix Original Christmas Special featuring Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, Michael Cera, Maya Rudolph, George Clooney, Miley Cyrus, and Rashida Jones, among others – need I say more? Dir. Sofia Coppola, 2015 Synopsis: “Bill Murray worries no one will show up to his T.V. show due to a terrible snow-storm in New York City.” Happy Christmas doesn’t have much to do about Christmas other than that it takes place during the holiday season, but that shouldn’t stop you from checking it out. Joe Swanberg’s mumblecore film was one of my favorites from 2014 for a handful of reasons. Not only was the dialogue completely improvised, but the production was filmed in Swanberg’s home and stars both him and is actual baby son. How cool is that?! Baby Swanberg is so entertaining that he’s enough of a reason to see Happy Christmas, but everything else about the film is quite wonderful too. Dir. Joe Swanberg, 2014 Synopsis: “After a break up, Jenny moves in with writer Kelly, her filmmaker husband, and their child. Despite a rocky start, …

Netflix Recommendations: Recent Releases

Happy Christmas → In wonderful Joe Swanberg fashion, Happy Christmas feels so real because it is. The dialogue was completely improvised and the production was filmed in Swanberg’s home and stars both him and is actual baby son. How cool is that?! Baby Swanberg is so entertaining that he’s enough of a reason to see Happy Christmas, but everything else about the film is quite wonderful too. Jenny (Anna Kendrick) is a somewhat careless twenty-something-year-old who comes to Chicago to live with her brother Jeff (Joe Swanberg) and his wife Kelly (Melanie Lynskey). Her arrival totally shakes things up and makes for a great story about the responsibilities that come with growing up and the importance of making personal happiness a priority, even in the face of adversity. I also enjoyed Lena Dunham’s playful role in the film as Kelly’s slightly more stable friend, Carson. Happy Christmas will definitely be on my Favorite Films of 2014 list!   The One I Love → Ethan (Mark Duplass) and Sophie (Elizabeth Moss) have a marriage that was once fun and loving, but is now falling apart. In an attempt …

REVIEW: “Drinking Buddies”

Drinking Buddies, written and directed by Joe Swanberg, is a romantic comedy starring Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Ron Livingston. The film examines the romantic lives of Kate (Wilde) and Luke (Johnson), best friends and co-workers who seem to have more chemistry than a ‘Breaking Bad’ episode. The catch? They’re both in serious relationships with other people. And after a double-date weekend trip, things become even more complex when their significant others seem to have a little chemistry of their own. Laughter, tears, and complication ensue. Cleverness aside, I absolutely loved Drinking Buddies. I’ll admit that as a ‘New Girl’/Jake Johnson fan, I may be biased. He’s just too good at being the goofy guy who’s totally cute and secretly in love with a cool girl (that you mentally replace with yourself). But at its core, Drinking Buddies is a spectacularly simple movie about a not-so-simple topic: Love, lust, romance, and relationships. And what’s wonderful about Swanberg’s film is that it doesn’t fall victim to cliches or evolve as a stereo-typical rom-com. The viewer is left dangling, as unsure where …
