MUSIC VIDEOS || Spike Jonze

From David Fincher to Michel Gondry, many successful film and television directors got their start directing music videos and commercials, and some continue to do so today. Among my favorite music video directors is Spike Jonze, whose videos are always extraordinarily fun and exceptionally creative. I would describe his work as being simple in a bare bones kind of way, but infused with an intense burst of imagination and kinetic energy. Here are a few of my favorite Spike Jonze videos – what are yours? DROP – The Pharcyde DRUNK GIRLS – LCD Soundsystem OTIS – Kanye West, Jay Z SABOTAGE – Beastie Boys WEAPON OF CHOICE – Fatboy Slim

Seattle’s EMP Museum

The EMP Museum (formerly Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame) was founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2000. The non-profit museum is dedicated to contemporary pop culture and includes a variety of ever-changing exhibits. Current exhibits include Spectacle: The Music Video, Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic, Hear My Train a Comin’: Hendrix Hits London, Icons of Science Fiction, Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film, and Nirvana: Taking Punk To The Masses. The museum also houses a sound lab where visitors can try their hand at an assortment of instruments, and a stage where guests have the opportunity to film their own music video. Visiting the EMP Museum was an especially fun and enlightening experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Seattle, even if your visit is short. The museum often hosts events, so be sure to check their calendar before planning your trip: EMP Museum *Note – I recommend taking the monorail from the Westlake Center in downtown Seattle to the museum. It’s a short ride and only …

#TBT Video Of The Day: ‘Drop’ By The Pharcyde

Lately I’ve been posting videos of the day more often – and I decided that, in honor of the popular #tbt phenomenon, on Thursdays I will post throwback videos. Before he was a well known director of feature length films, Spike Jonze was the king of music videos. Here is one of my favorite of his music videos, for the song ‘Drop’ by The Pharcyde, which was filmed in Los Angeles in 1995.
