Going on a Summer Hiatus

Hey, hi, hello! Lately I haven’t had much time to dedicate to Catch-all, nor have I been all that excited about working on it. I’ve been blogging for the past five years, and up until recently it never felt like a chore. Blogging was always something I did as a hobby, but the fun of it has dissipated. I’ve decided to take a break, but not give up entirely on Catch-all. I’ll be back by the end of the summer and will hopefully feel refreshed and excited about working on it again. Until then, I’m going to focus on a few other projects I’d like to get started on, and spend more free time reading, watching movies and TV, and doing other things that make me happy. I’ll still be on Instagram and Twitter, so you can follow me there — and come back to Catch-all around September to see what’s new in this neck of the woods! As always, thanks for reading! ❤ Julia

Positive Change as an Individual

In these socially and politically tumultuous times, I think it’s important to reflect on what we can do as individuals to contribute to the greater good. While significant change is enacted by policy-making, progress within one’s lifestyle and personal relationship to society as a whole is also essential in creating change. Below is a work-in-progress list of ways I think an individual can create positive change. While I’m sharing this on Catch-all, it’s also a personal reminder of the many ways I can use my individual power for good. This list will always be evolving, so please comment below with any suggestions you may have. Ask more questions! Think critically, engage with new ideas, listen to your peers, confront your own problematic assumptions, and always look beyond the surface level Cultivate a community of friends and family who hold you accountable for your actions and words Support businesses owned by immigrants, women, people of color, members of the LGBT community, etc. Support the work of diverse journalists, artists, authors, and filmmakers, etc. Question the status-quo Avoid fast fashion and …

Surviving Stress & Other Things: The Election, DAPL, & Grad School

Lately I’ve been so busy with school that I’ve completely neglected this blog, as well as many other aspects of my life. So to jump back into it (because I may finally have a bit more free time) here are a few things that have recently been on my mind: The election → With the U.S. presidential election just three days away, I am scared. My friends and family are scared, and a large portion of the country and world is too. What if donald trump* becomes our next president? What then? I truly believe that with trump in the White House, the future of our country is at stake. I won’t feel comfortable, let alone safe, with an inexperienced, fragile, and hateful racist/sexist/xenophobic billionaire running our country. I am so exhausted by this entire election that there’s not much more I can say here other than, please vote. Please vote for Hillary Clinton. Practicing Self-care

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political welfare.” – Audre Lorde About a month ago I had an incident that made me realize I need to focus more energy on my well-being and prioritize practicing self-care. I believe that in order to be my best self (which means doing my best for others too) there are certain steps I should take to ensure my emotional, mental, and physical health and happiness, and you should too! 1. Understand the importance of your health and wellbeing. As I get older, I realize that when my body and mind are out of whack, everything’s out of whack. I know it’s a common phrase to hear, but it’s true: when it comes to our mental and physical health, everything is connected. In order to do my best as a student, daughter, friend, sister, and partner, I have to first do what’s best for my body and mind. 2. You must find time for rest and relaxation. The Burden of Being Aware

As I become more knowledgable about a number of topics, I’ve found myself getting a little down. I believe that being open, aware, and working to expand upon one’s knowledge of our complicated world is of the utmost importance. But, as necessary as it is, it can also be extremely painful. As I continue to accept that our world is severely flawed, I’m growing into my awareness one step at a time. I can’t image the toll this takes on activists, who constantly burden themselves with the troubles they are working to alleviate. It reminds me that we all need to laugh, dance, and cry, and we must never take the fragility of our emotions for granted. In the words of Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks, “every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it; don’t wait for it; just let it happen. It could be a new shirt in a men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black, coffee.” No matter how difficult it may get, you should never stop learning …
