Media Consumption Histories

Sometimes I write blog posts and forget to post them! This is one of those posts. I started writing this in early 2017, completely forgot about it and never finished it, but decided to share it now without making any updates. A lot has changed since I wrote this, but I still think it’s kind of fun to share. Enjoy—or don’t! This past semester I was a graduate teaching assistant for the Introduction to Television lecture at USC, which required that I ran my own weekly hour-long class. Although the topic each week varied, many of our class discussions returned to the future of TV, and the ways in which digital technology has uprooted and transformed the traditional television landscape. As a result, I began thinking about my own consumption history and that of my closest friends and family. Watch Abha Dawesar’s TED Talk: “Life in the ‘Digital Now'”

I don’t often watch or listen to TED Talks, but when I happen across one while endlessly scrolling online or listening to NPR – like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “We Should All Be Feminists” – they always seem to emerge at the perfect time in my life. And I love novelist Abha Dawesar’s “Life in the ‘Digital Now,’” not only because she’s brilliant and speaks to so much about our digital lives that I’ve been trying to grasp, but her talk came into my life at the exact moment I needed it. I’m currently taking an entertainment business class at USC about digital technology and the entertainment industry. For the most part I thoroughly enjoy the course, but I wasn’t prepared for all of the focus on futurism and our likely destinies as tech-obsessed individuals and societies. Taking this class has made me realize that talk of a hyper-technological reality is personally anxiety inducing. And visions of a world filled with AR, VR, and AI are absolutely terrifying. Fast Company

I haven’t posted a “Recommended Reading” since this past summer, so I thought it would be a good time to talk about another publication I have recently subscribed to and love: Fast Company. I rarely buy anything placed near the register at a grocery store, but a few months ago I was intrigued by a magazine cover that read “A Billion Fans Can’t Be Wrong: How YouTube is banking on stars like Bethany Mota to recharge Google’s future and fight off Disney and Yahoo.” So I bought it, was hooked, and quickly became a subscriber. Fast Company is a technology, business, and design magazine that was developed in 1995 by previous editors of the Harvard Business Review. The publication focuses on innovation in business and design, featuring articles about up-and-coming companies and old-standbys. Fast Company celebrates creativity, risk-taking, and thinking beyond traditional boundaries. In my first issue I learned about Google’s purchase of YouTube, how YouTube content creators are spilling over into the mainstream entertainment industry, and read about James Cameron’s latest documentary where he completed a record-breaking dive to …
