As Simple As Good Weather

I’m not sure when the next time I’ll write about media or pop culture is, because lately all I can think about is how I feel. Feeling good, bad, tired, anxious, happy, confused…all the damn feelings. In coping with said feelings, I’ve been working to tune into what makes me feel good and focus on those things. Luckily, a lot of things make me feel good. Taking a nice shower, talking to a loved one, watching a funny show, listening to music—I can count on all of those things turning a moment of darkness into something lighter. But you know what I’ve realized is the ultimate cure for my sad, weird, or anxious feelings? BEING OUTSIDE IN GOOD FUCKING WEATHER! I’ve been told many times throughout my life that I don’t know what “real fall” is because I was born in the wrong part of the country. And a few years ago when I was in New York in November I realized all those people were right, that definitely is REAL FALL. But you know what? …

That Fall Feeling

Things are starting to cool off here in Los Angeles and I’m getting a bit of that fall feeling. There’s a crispness in the air that reminds me of fall in Arizona; the leaves may not change colors, but I always sense that as the weather cools off, the mood changes. Things start moving just a little bit slower, and for some reason, I always begin to feel more at ease. In addition to embracing the calmness that fall brings to my life, I’ve promised myself that I’m going to work on creative projects throughout the year, so that school doesn’t entirely burn me out. I thoroughly enjoy academic work, but at my core I’m someone who likes to get my hands dirty and make things. I’ve completely neglected that side of myself as of late, so in an attempt to reinvigorate my creative tendencies, I’m going to be bringing a little more experimental energy to Catch-all. And in order to get some ideas flowing, I’ve decided to share my fall inspired mood board. What’s creatively inspiring you right now?

Video of the Day: Arizona Monsoon

By definition, monsoon refers to a seasonal wind in South and Southeast Asia that brings ample rain, but those of us native to Arizona call our summer rains monsoons too. Last week I was lucky enough to head home to Tucson during spring break, and although it didn’t rain, returning to the desert made me realize just how much I’ve been missing monsoon season. I write about Tucson quite often, but growing up in the Sonoran Desert is a gift that I’ll never take for granted, and I’ll use every opportunity I have to share its character and beauty. I recently came across Monsoon II by Mike Olbinski and couldn’t help but post it. Enjoy, and be sure to check out more of Olbinski’s work on his blog and Vimeo.
